Our Opportunity
(SPSCC) seeks a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Assistive Technology Specialist .
The Assistive Technology Specialist reports directly to the Dean of Academic Success Programs and provides expert consultation, analysis, and training to faculty and instructional staff in support of the college's digital accessibility goals. The incumbent works directly with faculty to conduct accessibility assessments, recommends options for digital course content, and both develops and provides faculty and staff-facing training in accessibility best practices. Additionally, the incumbent provides support for referrals associated with SPSCC-provided assistive learning device technology and software, and both assesses and tests requested software products and services for accessibility as part of the procurement process. The Assistive Technology Specialist is part of the Center for Teaching and Online Learning, collaborates closely with the Director of Access Services, and holds a full-time, exempt professional position on a twelve-month annual contract with a competitive salary rate.

What You'll Do
Responsibilities and duties of the Assistive Technology Specialist include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Create and facilitate training of staff and faculty in accessibility requirements for all aspects of course delivery, including print and digital formats.
  • Develop and support instructional design of educational materials with an emphasis on accessibility.
  • Serve as the back-up to the learning management system administrator.
  • Participate as a member of college committees that determine technology and software for college instruction and services.
  • Assist in the IT procurement process of all new software and technology by reviewing and testing purchase requests for compliance with state and federal digital accessibility laws.
  • Stay informed about current accessibility research, laws, and regulations to guide development and revision of policies, procedures, and practices for the campus community.
  • Provide accessibility reports as needed.
  • Create, foster, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administration, and community members
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications You Possess

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and experience with designing and supporting accessible learning materials.
  • Experience in evaluating software and applications against Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA standards
  • Knowledge of assistive products, including Dragon Naturally Speaking, Zoom Text, Jaws, Wynn, Braille Embosser, and others
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an emphasis on communicating with diverse people and supporting students with disabilities
  • Demonstrated experience solving complex problems in a confidential environment
