The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.

We are recruiting interns for Summer 2025. The topic of the internship will be "Language Technology For All," where you will focus on performing research on cutting-edge language systems to make them more accurate, efficient, or inclusive. These positions will work together with a CMU faculty member on a research project, with the goal being that you build skills while performing cutting-edge research.

Internship Topics

  • AI programming agents to make programming more accessible
  • More efficient language models that can be run directly on your mobile devices
  • Pre-training methods for language models that better cover diverse perspectives
  • Methods to audit the fairness, biases, and safety of language model
  • Methods to improve the multilingual and multicultural capabilities of language models

Qualifications

  • High School Education or GED
  • Must have or come from educational backgrounds relevant to language technology outside of computer science (e.g. linguistics, cognitive science, sociology, etc.)
  • Candidates must interested in making more inclusive language technology
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
